The motion picture based on the best-selling novel, The Help, written by Kathryn Stockett, will open in theaters nation-wide on August 10.
Starring Cicely Tyson, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Sissy Spacek, Mary Steenburgen and others, the film tells the story of “three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk.” Source
The film is a period piece and during the civil rights era, if marches served as the blood lifeline for the movement towards equality, the music of that era provided the beat. The film’s soundtrack is already creating Oscar buzz and features, The Living Proof, a song that was written and recorded by Mary J. Blige.

Jet: Why do you think some Africa-Americans dislike the story?
OS: It’s a reminder of whence we came. And for a lot of people it’s just too painful to go there because it says to them that the rest of the world doesn’t think that we’ve evolved. I disagree.
VD: It’s not as black and white as agreeing and disagreeing. I completely understand. It’s a story and an image that is always visited: the Black domestic. I think people are tired of that story. It’s hard to watch people being demeaned, especially when they look like you. My only response is: This a great story. Although it happens to take place in the 1960s and the characters happen to be maids, they are fully humanized.
Jet: Yet your characters are constantly being mistreated. Was that difficult for you mentally?
VD: For my character, it was constant humiliation and having to suck it in. So yeah, I had to take mental breaks. I felt like it affected me in different ways - anger that I couldn’t express.
OS: I took every bit of what Minny went through in stride because I knew that she was going to have her moment. I knew that she was going to be able to say what she felt - and rarely do we ever get to do that.
